Teaching Practice

Since 2018 Brian has maintained an adjunct teaching practice. During that time he has had the opportunity to teach portfolio, typography, and critical issues for CUNY City College, CUNY City Tech, and Fordham University. No matter the subject his teaching philosophy rests on a couple core principles. First, he frames each course as a learning society, rather than a lecture series. His assignments, and the rules for engagement, are designed to amplify student voices. He views his role as that of a facilitator. His goal is to craft and support an environment where students learn through dialogue with each other. Second, He organizes his syllabi using an overarching conceptual framework. Each syllabus begins with a short essay that makes a case for the framework. The course schedule is color-coded in-line with the organizing framework so students can easily locate themselves within the story arc of the semester, and understand how the classes and assignments build on each other. He has found that structuring courses using these core principles successfully fosters dynamic multidirectional conversations which result in student-lead learning.
